Book Review: City of Bones

by: Becky Campbell

Quick Facts

City of Bones is part of Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instrument series. Clare is also the author of the Infernal Devices series which is the prequel series of Mortal Instruments. The 4th installment, City of Fallen Angels, was released April of 2011.

Story and Plot

CoB is a really good book in terms of plot development and twists. Even though the book does a lot of explaining, it does not bore the reader like some books do. CoB’s genre is fantasy, and there are a lot of fantasy elements installed into the book such as pixies, werewolves, and vampires (that don’t sparkle like bottles of glitter). The one main downfall is that the book leaves you hanging. Yes, it is part of a series, and you MUST read the other two (City of Ashes and City of Glass) in order to understand why certain things happen and why things are the way they are.

Characters

The characters are interesting. Be prepared for some annoying (and funny) characters and circumstances. The only character that develops in the book is the main character, Clary. The rest of the characters do develop later on in the series… well, most of them.

Recommended Reading

If you enjoyed reading this book, I obviously recommend reading the sequel books as well as the prequel book. However, I do not recommend reading the prequel book before the others. I’d recommend Twilight, but I personally dislike the series because it is 100% Mary Sue; but if you like it, I recommend reading this book to see what a vampire really is.
