Despite tech bumps, Cobblers’ year begins well

The school year started out smoothly, with the traffic and parking situations making the front page of the Rapid City Journal. Somehow it seem It seemed ironic that everyone wondered where we were all going to park, when there was just as little parking at the end of school last year.

Announcements will begin in earnest next week, taking to the air waves at the beginning of second block. In case you’re wondering, the student council is in charge of these, and the “studio” is an area behind the librarians’ desks in the library.

Technology has been an issue at the beginning of school, with the computers in the computer lab and library  not really working. The issues mostly surround networking and logistics with the new computers, which were purchased or leased in every building in the district. At Central, some students spent almost half a block attempting to log in, without ever succeeding. It brings to mind Einstein’s comments on insanity: “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” On the other end of the problems the technology support folks are running around like crazy, completing thousands of work orders throughout the district. Hopefully these problems will have been solved before English teachers begin talking about research papers. Then again, if the computers never work, does that mean students can just write them with a pen and paper?

With the beginning of the year everyone is trying to make a good impression. Mr. Lore is opening the year with a tie streak, wearing a tie for as many days in a row as he can. As of Friday morning, he was at five–an impressive stretch considering that Friday is jeans day!
