Rapid City Central has its own real Guitar Hero. Johnny Hastings walked into English 9 freshman year like nothing had even phased him. His best friend Nathan was bragging him up like he had just performed the best show of his life. As a matter of fact, I was a witness of this great show that he had performed the night before: it was Central’s Battle of the Bands, and I can still see it to this day. Johnny came out as a freshman, fearless on stage, and ripped out an amazing solo. He blew everyone’s mind when he started playing his guitar behind his head and back. Nobody had known how talented he really was until that night. His talent has only grown since then and his musicianship is bound to take him places.
Before it does take him anywhere, however, it will take him to Central stage once more. On Friday, November 5th, Central hosts its annual Battle of the Bands. The show begins at 7:00p.m. and Johnny’s current band is on the line up. You won’t want to miss any of it, but you’ll be particularly sorry if you miss Johnny’s last official Battle.
Graduation is just around the corner and nobody knows exactly what their future plans are, but when all is said and done, I am glad to have known this outstanding young musician and wish him the best of luck in the future. This guitar legend of Central High School will never be forgotten.
While you can’t see it when viewing from school, here is a boot leg video of Johnny playing guitar for The Commodities at their CD release party last year:
