February is almost over and with the beginning of March comes the end of basketball season for the Cobbler boys. Sitting at a 7-10 record after a few tough losses, the boys know they have a lot of work to do but they are optimistic about making it to state this year. Said Coach Spease: “It’s always a goal of ours to make it to state every year. We’re just working to better our game every time we go out there.”

Spease believes the team’s strong suit lies in having several big scorers and also in the athleticism and speed of the boys. Experience has also been on their side this season, having eight seniors on their roster most of whom have played together for most of their basketball careers. Both Parker Schnabel and Tanner Sumption, two of the seniors, agreed that a tight-knit squad has worked to their advantage. Starting power forward Tanner Sumption says the boys are all very supportive of each other: “Chemistry is our big thing. We know each other’s strengths and weaknesses. When one person’s down we all know how to just pick each other up and keeping playing.”

With only three games left the boys are hoping to finish the season strong and make it to the State Tournament in Brookings. The boys are hosting Stevens for the last time in the regular season tonight and hoping to come out with a win. Spease’s take on the upcoming game was to treat it just like any other game. “We try not to make a big deal out of any one game versus another. We just need to go out there and execute and not worry about the rest.”
